When the bell rings for battle: Liberia’s inter-class quiz competitions

Quizzing competitions have long held a special place in Liberian school culture. They’re more than just tests dressed up in competition clothes. They’re a chance for students to discover what they’re capable of under pressure, to lean on teammates, and to walk away a little more confident than when they arrived. From mathematics to English, science to social studies, these contests push students to actually know their material, not just skim it.

And recently, our students delivered in a big way.

Grade 6 vs. Grade 7

The first match-up had the kind of back-and-forth that keeps an audience on the edge of their seats. Grade 6 came prepared and showed it, answering with confidence and keeping the pressure on throughout every round. Grade 7, though, proved just as sharp, and when the dust settled, they took home the win. It was the sort of competition that makes both sides better, regardless of the final score.

Grade 8 vs. Grade 9

The second match brought a more seasoned energy. Grade 8 and Grade 9 students tackled questions across multiple subjects with enthusiasm, and what stood out wasn’t just the knowledge on display. It was the atmosphere. Teammates cheered each other on. Students thought out loud, worked through difficult questions together, and supported each other whether the answer came or not. That’s the culture these competitions quietly build.

Bigger than the scoreboard

It’s easy to focus on who won. But the real story of a quizzing competition lives in the weeks of preparation before it, and the conversations that carry on long after. Students who go through this process don’t just become better test-takers. They become sharper communicators. They learn how to speak up in front of a crowd, how to stay composed when they don’t know the answer, and how to be a good teammate when someone else does.

Those are skills that show up everywhere. In classrooms, yes, but also in careers, communities, and life. And that’s why inter-class quizzing, year after year, remains one of the most worthwhile things we do.
